How does my pet get heartworm?

It all begins with a bite. A bite from an infected mosquito can release heartworm into your pet’s bloodstream. If your furry friend is bitten more than once, this can cause unwanted visitors in your pet’s system. It can be hard to know when your pet has been infected, so it is important to bring them in regularly so we can take the necessary steps to diagnose and treat them accurately. 

What are the symptoms of heartworm disease?

You can never judge a book by its cover when it comes to heartworm. Heartworm can cause non-visible symptoms in your pet, making it harder to notice or know if your pet has been infected. Days, months and years can go by without your pet showing signs or symptoms of infection, which is where regular heartworm testing comes in handy. Some of the signs you can look out for include: 

• Constant coughing
• Difficulty breathing
• Reduced appetite or weight loss
• Fatigue 
• Unwillingness to exercise
